Some Words to Live By:
“I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked.
One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantin and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and offbeat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn’t quite make out.
I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn’t make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet.”

I’m Driftygal, aka Magic Icelandic Crab.
I’m a professional navel-gazer with a hard exterior and a soft heart.

I find inspiration in travel, writing, film, and all things hippie-dippie (but I draw the line at crystals).

Why not my name?
I like to separate my virtual self from my “me” self. Though you’ll see glimmers, I won’t talk about my friends or family much, and when I do, it’ll be sparingly.
I really think that people need to stop living their lives online. I treat this blog as an ongoing record of my writing and bucket-list efforts. Major milestones, such as my wedding, may be mentioned in passing or in a one-time post, but I don’t see a version of myself creating endless streams of content around it.
That’s not to knock anyone who does – I just value my offline self. So I’ve created this space to represent my creativity and curiosity, parts of myself that I’m happy to share.

You’ll also find some of my coursework from NYU trickling in here and there. This site is about my bucket list and travel, but also about my interests (like zines and food). I hope you enjoy your time here!
