My first polar plunge was around 2015. That, however, was far before this list. I was visiting Asheville with my friend Claire, and we decided to go to a Shoji Spa. I’m not sure if they’re still open, but I highly recommend it if they are. You get served tea, they have hot tubs overlooking the forest, and it’s very relaxing. They also have a cold plunge.
I did the cold plunge. I was nervous, and it took some positive reinforcement to get me in the small tub. But I did it. It wasn’t pleasurable, and I can’t say I looked forward to ever doing it again.
As the years have gone by, I’ve learned that I have a mood disorder – essentially, it stems from a chemical imbalance and is related to sleep. I’ve undergone intense DBT therapy for the last two years and finally have a good medication combo. Those things have helped with the impacts of the disorder – acting impulsively, leading with “emotion mind,” being flooded with emotions, and one of the most difficult, seeking out dopamine highs. You can imagine the last one leads to dark places if you’re not careful.
Thankfully, I have been luckier than most, and for me, those dark places include spending too much money or taking on too much and burning out.
31. Do five cold plunges
So, I’ve challenged myself to find thrills elsewhere. Cold plunges and wild swimming are used to treat depression, and a lot of people swear by it. Before attempting the first technical plunge for The Drifty List, I did a lot of research. Overall, the internet recommended:
- Not being in the water for more than three minutes (for the first time)
- Building up your tolerance to cold water
- Having dry clothes and a towel ready to go
For my first plunge, I decided to go to Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina this last January. Read more about that adventure, and stay tuned for others here!
